Curriculum & Learning
Learning at Heretaunga
Our curriculum inspires curious, confident, and capable ākonga who are proud to learn, achieve, and contribute. Being Proudly Heretaunga means fostering a culture where creativity, curiosity, and innovation are encouraged, diversity is celebrated, and our core values of manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and rangatiratanga guide everything we do.
Local History and Community Connection
We place a strong emphasis on place-based learning. Our location in Heretaunga and the rich history of Ngāti Kahungunu offer authentic opportunities for students to connect with their local environment, culture, and heritage through the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories and Social Sciences curriculum.
Te Ao Mārama Specialist Hub
Alongside high-quality mainstream classroom learning, students explore hands-on innovation in Te Ao Mārama. As our dedicated hub for science, technology, and the arts, this modern space empowers ākonga to investigate, create, and solve real-world problems.
Responsive Teaching
Our learning programmes align with the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum while adapting dynamically to the unique strengths and needs of each student. We continually invest in staff professional development to ensure every learner experiences an engaging and inclusive education every day.
Mathematics
Purposeful Learning for Secondary Preparation
We believe every ākonga can succeed in mathematics. Our curriculum follows a progressive scope and sequence grounded in the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum, building deep understanding, confidence, and critical problem-solving skills to ensure students are fully prepared for high school.
Practical Life Skills and Targeted Support
Students apply mathematical concepts through meaningful contexts such as financial literacy, budgeting, measurement, and data interpretation. Using high-quality tools like Prime Mathematics alongside digital learning resources, our teachers leverage smaller class sizes to provide tailored support and extension so every student grows as a confident mathematician.
English (Reading & Writing)
Creative and Authentic Communication
We inspire a lifelong love of reading, writing, and storytelling. Ākonga explore diverse fiction and non-fiction texts to develop critical thinking, while crafting narratives, persuasive pieces, speeches, reports, and digital presentations for real-world audiences.
Structured Literacy and Whānau Partnership
Our teachers use an evidence-based structured literacy approach to strengthen foundational reading, writing, and oral language skills while extending advanced learners. Continuous formative assessment is woven naturally into daily activities, keeping instruction targeted and ensuring whānau remain closely informed of their child’s progress.
