Learning Support
At Heretaunga Intermediate, we believe every ākonga deserves the opportunity to learn, participate, belong and succeed. Learning support is about identifying strengths, recognising barriers to learning, and working in partnership with whānau to ensure every child has equitable access to learning and the support they need to thrive. Support may be short-term or ongoing and is tailored to meet the individual needs of each learner.
Learning Support Coordinator
SENCo & LSC
Our Learning Support Coordinator (LSC) and Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) work together to support ākonga with additional learning, wellbeing and behaviour needs. Together, they help ensure students are well supported as they transition into Heretaunga Intermediate and again as they move on to secondary school.
Working closely with whānau, kaiako, contributing primary schools, secondary schools and external agencies, the Learning Support Coordinator and SENCO coordinate personalised support, specialist services and successful transitions. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning, behaviour or wellbeing, they are available to work alongside you to ensure your child receives the support they need to thrive throughout their time at Heretaunga Intermediate.
Pastoral Care
The intermediate years are an exciting time of growth, change and discovery. We understand that this stage of life can also bring challenges, and we are committed to ensuring every ākonga feels safe, valued, connected and supported to thrive.
Strong relationships are at the heart of everything we do. Our caring and experienced kaiako know their learners well and work closely with whānau to support both wellbeing and learning.
We are fortunate to have a dedicated wellbeing team, including two Whānau Mentors who work alongside ākonga every day, a social worker on site, and the Rongo Mauri team, who provide counselling and wellbeing support within our kura. Together, we ensure that help is available when it is needed and that every ākonga has someone they can turn to.
At Heretaunga Intermediate, we believe that when ākonga feel a strong sense of belonging and wellbeing, they are empowered to learn, grow and succeed. Mauri Ora!
